The Sexy Vegan

If you haven't heard of the Sexy Vegan (not meaning Donna or me, which of course you have heard of and are correct, hot stuff here) then you are in for treat.

Brian L. Patton aka The Sexy Vegan is hilarious!! I use that word a lot. But really he is. I recent picked up his cookbook called, you guessed it, The Sexy Vegan, and proceeded to spray diet coke out of my nose as he described the way he was born (via c-section) because "he was all backwards and shit". He also discloses how his friends caught him dvr-ing episodes of food network shows but labeling them Star Trek.

The recipes are killer. The Not Yo' Mama's Cheez Sauce is now a staple here. But honestly just read it for a laugh. Or watch his videos. It is way too easy to take yourself far too seriously with all of the this vegan business. This will knock you down a few pegs. And clear your sinuses.

Supermarket Vegan

I checked this out at the library and much to my chagrin I had to return it today. I bet one of you has the hold on it that won't let me renew. So thanks to whoever you are, I am now anxiously awaiting my copy from Amazon.

It is called Supermarket Vegan: 225 Meat-Free, Egg-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes for Real People in the Real WorldBuy it here!

It is a GREAT cookbook. And I don't mean because the recipes are super decadent. They aren't really. I mean everything is super tasty. But what the main thing is about this book is that it is easy stuff to make, with crap you can find at Winco vs Whole Foods. I like that. I don't always have the time or the money to go to New Seasons. Sometimes I need to go to Target. Bam!! This book has me covered. Need something to give to your parents, who are scared to cook for you because they don't know what agar-agar is, then this is it. Good chance they know what canned artichoke hearts are.

Check it out. It will be a great addition to your shelf.

Review - The Happy Herbivore Cookbook

Not all vegan food is healthy, you can still be a big fatty and eat vegan if, for instance, all you eat is French Fries. Lindsay S. Nixon, author of The Happy Herbivore Cookbook: Over 175 Delicious Fat-Free and Low-Fat Vegan Recipes, created a cookbook that has recipes as delicious as they are healthy.

All of the recipes have no or very little added fat which is great for your heart, but can take a little getting used to when it comes to cleaning your pans. (Honestly, I haven't had that much trouble with clean up yet, but I keep expecting to.)

I haven't made all the recipes in this book (there are over 175 of them remember), but I have made quite a few and haven't been dissappointed. The Chocolate Zucchini Muffins are probably the #1 winner so far. The Ghandi Bowl is our favorite quick fix and we love the Mac and Cheese.

Today for kicks, I wanted to try the Black Bean Brownies. The recipe can be found here - http://happyherbivore.com/recipe/vegan-blackbean-brownies/ as well as in the book. To be honest it was the only thing that I have had that I wasn't thrilled with.

They had too much cinnamon and tasted too much like banana.  So next time I am going to follow the alternative recipe - green bananas but added sugar. And no cinnamon. Maybe decaf instant coffee.

My tester. She only took one bite...wah wah.

I am going to try again soon, because the had all the potential for total deliciousness.  But seriously everything else has been great! And so healthy. Totally worth picking up at your local bookstore. Maybe with it's help I can lose this damn holiday weight.
